Nathaniel Witherell Offers Excellent Post-Hospitalization Acute Care

When patients are hospitalized, the goal of the hospital staff is to facilitate a full and complete recovery. But, sending a patient home too soon could result in re-hospitalization. Extending a patient’s hospital stay to ensure full recovery is costly and can put patients at risk for hospital acquired infections.

The Nathaniel Witherell’s short term rehabilitation unit, rated “Top Performing” by U.S. News & World Report, is pleased to be an important step-down resource for area hospitals, offering post-hospitalization acute care that shortens hospital stays, gets patients healthy, and helps them get back home and into the community with the support of home health care.

The Witherell’s short term rehabilitation unit holds a 5-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, and offers comprehensive programs for cardiac/pulmonary issues, sepsis management, IV therapy, wound care, orthopedic rehabilitation, neurological issues, general medical care, and outpatient rehabilitation.

“Our short-term rehabilitation unit works as a partner with local hospitals, whether it’s Greenwich or Stamford Hospital, White Plains Hospital, or hospitals in New York City,” says John Mastronardi, executive director at the Witherell. “We are able to help patients continue their recovery through specialized rehabilitation. Then, once a patient is ready, we can support continued recovery by creating a discharge plan that includes home health care, too.”

The Witherell receives many referrals from hospital discharge planners who know that exceptional care will continue once a patient arrives at the Witherell. “We work collaboratively with each patient’s physician to develop a personalized care plan that is patient-centered,” says Mastronardi. “Our step-down services relieve the burden of extended care for hospitals, and let patients recover with the support of a top-notch staff in a home-like environment with wonderful amenities.”

The Witherell’s team includes physical and occupational therapists, registered nurses and licensed practical nurses, a medical director, and a physiatrist. Services are provided in a newly renovated 4,000 square foot rehabilitation center with suites for physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech and language pathology. The Witherell’s short-term rehab unit features 46 private rooms that are spacious and graciously appointed.

“Being able to recover right in the community gives our residents and their families tremendous peace of mind,” notes Mastronardi. “With our rigorous sanitization protocols designed to keep our residents and staff healthy, the Witherell is ready to support both the short-term and long-term healthcare needs of all of our neighbors.”
