Just as in Real Estate, Location Matters for Senior Care!

Making the decision on a skilled nursing facility for an older adult parent can be difficult. As senior care experts, we’re often asked what families should consider when making that choice. Quality of care is primary. But, according to many experts in the field, a facility’s location is also tremendously important.

According to Aging.com, “When considering different nursing home care, location is one of the most important factors to consider. If you’re the one needing care, you will want to be as close to your family as possible.”

The Nathaniel Witherell is owned by the Town of Greenwich, and has a 118-year history of providing exceptional care to the senior population in Greenwich and surrounding towns. “Our campus is well-known to this community. In fact, many of our adult volunteers started volunteering here when they were in the Greenwich schools,” says John Mastronardi, Executive Director of The Nathaniel Witherell. “Witherell residents are Connecticut’s teachers, first responders, civil servants, nurses, librarians, and loving parents and grandparents of our Town’s residents.”

An important point. Just as in real estate, location can make a real difference in quality of life for seniors for many reasons. Usually, the need for skilled nursing comes up suddenly as a result of an injury or illness that requires hospitalization. While families hope to have time to do their homework, they often don’t have that luxury. That’s when having a lifelong familiarity and affiliation with a top senior care facility right in your community is a huge benefit.

Additionally, as seniors transition to a new home in senior care, they still want to maintain a connection to their previous lives. “Being able to stay in your own community is very reassuring to seniors,” says Mastronardi. “Many of our residents have lived their entire lives in Greenwich. Being able to continue their residence here helps ease any uncertainty or fear in making a move.”

Beyond our location, the Witherell is nationally recognized for delivering exceptional care, holding a 5-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid and Top Performing status from U.S. News & World Report as a Best Nursing Home in Connecticut. In addition, the Witherell’s staff retention rates are dramatically higher than the national average. Many of the nurses at the Witherell have worked here between 10 and 30 years, creating stability and continuity that’s an essential part of quality care.

When considering a skilled nursing facility, we suggest making these factors your top criteria:

  • Quality of care as confirmed by industry sources
  • Location and size of facility
  • Services provided
  • Word of mouth and recommendations
  • On-site visit to the campus
  • Interviews with administrators, staff, others

Feel free to reach out to the Witherell at (203) 618-4200 for questions or support in selecting a skilled nursing or short-term rehabilitation facility. We’re here to help!
