Jane Bryant Quinn to Speak at Friends of Nathaniel Witherell Spring Luncheon
Jane Bryant Quinn, an Emmy Award-winning commentator on personal finance, will be the featured speaker at the Friends of Nathaniel Witherell‘s Spring Luncheon at the Greenwich Country Club, on Wednesday, May 24 at 11:30 am. Quinn’s distinguished career includes long-running columns in Newsweek magazine, Good Housekeeping, and Woman’s Day, and a newspaper column syndicated to 250 papers by the Washington Post. Her latest book, How to Make Your Money Last: The Indispensable Retirement Guide, was just updated for 2017, and will be given to all those who attend this popular event. Proceeds from the luncheon will benefit The Nathaniel Witherell, the highly regarded, short-term rehabilitation and long-term nursing care center owned by the Town of Greenwich.
The Friends of Nathaniel Witherell Spring Luncheon tickets are $200 for a Friend level; $300, Best Friend; and $450, BFF (Best Friends Forever). The event’s exclusive media sponsor is Greenwich Magazine/Moffly Media. Additional support has been provided by The Daily Voice.
Quinn has established herself as America’s most reliable voice for people trying to manage their money well. In her public policy writings, she addresses matters of top concern to everyone, including investor protection, health insurance, Social Security and the future of retirement accounts. Quinn will be happy to share how she gained her financial expertise through trial and error. As she notes on her website: “For me, learning about money was a slow and sometimes painful job. No one is born with a mind for personal finance… Everything I learned, I learned by watching, reading, doing, and—yes—making some awful mistakes.”
Yet, Quinn learned from her many missteps, from an oil well in Ohio that came up dry to a top-performing mutual fund that lost 80 percent of its value. She says, “After listing my financial crimes, you might wonder why I write personal finance books! First, because I’m a lot smarter now. I’ve saved a lot of money and learned how to invest it well. Second, to show you that everyone makes mistakes. The trick is to learn from them, grow strong, and do better. And third, to abolish the myth that you have to be born with a math book in your mouth to be good at making decisions about your personal money.”
Quinn has worked extensively in television – as a financial correspondent on the “CBS Morning News” and the “CBS Evening News with Dan Rather.” On PBS, she hosted her own program, “Take Charge!“ Currently, she writes a monthly column for the AARP Bulletin. Her book, Making the Most of Your Money NOW, a comprehensive guide to personal finance, is now in its third edition. In 2010, she co-founded The Daily Voice, which brings local news to communities online. In addition to being awarded an Emmy for excellence in TV journalism, Quinn was the recipient of a Janus Award for outstanding coverage of news on television and the Gerald Loeb Award for distinguished lifetime achievement in business and financial journalism. She has also received many honorary degrees.
“We know that this will be an exceptional event as Jane Bryant Quinn is knowledgeable, interesting, and relates very well to people who find the world of finance and investment sometimes daunting,” says Karen Sadik-Khan, President of the Friends of Nathaniel Witherell. “We couldn’t be more excited!”
