At Witherell, we believe our residents should be able to continue to enjoy the life they’ve been accustomed to living. That’s why we provide extensive social, cultural, and pastoral services as well as a range of upscale amenities.
In a typical month, residents can choose from over 100 programs and events. The programs have been put together after an extensive assessment of our residents’ individual capabilities and interests. We present a broad array of therapeutic programs with the help of a full-time staff of recreation and music therapists under the supervision of a therapeutic recreation director.
Weekly offerings can include:
- classes on movement and stretching
- interactive musical events
- current events programs
- trips to the mall
- lunch at a local restaurant
- art programs
In addition, there is a schedule of annual picnics, holiday parties, rotating art exhibitions, ice cream socials, and pet shows. One of the most popular offerings is the monthly birthday party with musical entertainment. Special events appear on each month’s calendar.
Thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers, we are able to facilitate many events planned by the Therapeutic Recreation department. Their helping hands provide a significant contribution to the recreation program. Anyone wishing to join the ranks of valued volunteers can call Mary Tate at (203) 618-4228 or click here for more information.
Concerns for the human spirit are very important for a resident’s well-being. In order to meet the needs of those of all faiths and those with no religious affiliation, Greenwich Chaplaincy Services, an interfaith, non-profit ministry, provides pastoral care, religious services, and spiritual guidance as part of the care team for all residents at Nathaniel Witherell.
The Chaplaincy team and other local clergy provides pastoral care for residents, arranges worship and study experiences, and coordinates with local community clergy of all faiths. Roman Catholic Mass and Protestant worship, Catholic Rosary, and Jewish spiritual care are available in-house for residents. Jewish spiritual care takes place through 1:1 visits by Jewish clergy. Protestant services are provided by staff chaplains. Roman Catholic Mass is offered by priests from nearby St. Michael Parish. Catholic Eucharistic Ministers are regular weekly and Sunday visitors. In addition, a resident can have the chaplain arrange for individual visits or special religious rites with the clergy of his or her choice.
There are six regularly scheduled services that residents can attend, plus other special support gatherings:
- Catholic Mass is celebrated on Mondays at 11 a.m.
- Catholic Rosary is offered on Tuesdays at 11 a.m.
- Bible Study is offered on Tuesdays at 3:00 a.m.
- Protestant worship is held on Wednesdays at 11 a.m.
- Jewish spiritual care visits by Jewish clergy usually take place for 2 hours on Wednesdays
- A time of songs, prayer, scripture and touch-interaction is available on Fridays at 2 and 2:30 p.m. on the 2nd and 3rd floors
- A time of ecumenical Prayer and Communion is offered on Sundays at 11 a.m.
NOTE: Above days and times may be subject to change.
Our Chaplaincy team also provides spiritual support for families and staff. In times of grief Chaplaincy also offers to help plan and lead memorial services at no charge to families. Greenwich Chaplaincy can be reached directly by calling (203) 618-4236 at their office at Nathaniel Witherell, or visiting their website at greenwichchaplaincy.org.
