The Witherell Gets an Update: Historic Charm With Modern Amenities
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, The Nathaniel Witherell holds a cherished spot in Greenwich history. But history aside, delivering the utmost comfort to our residents is our top priority. So, we recently undertook a substantial renovation project to further enhance our historic property with modern updates.
The result will be a campus that features sunny and serene common areas, new state-of-the-art spa facilities in our long term care units, and a sophisticated and functional auditorium and solarium for events, concerts, and socializing.
“Our goal was to introduce upgrades and design elements to beautify our most used spaces at the Witherell,” says Allen Brown, Witherell’s executive director. “Design can offer a therapeutic benefit, so we focused on creating fresh, cheerful spaces for our residents and their families to enjoy everything the Witherell has to offer.”
Beginning in spring, our auditorium and solarium received a complete facelift. Along with a new suspended ceiling, lighting, a new sound system, and new ventilation diffusers, we added design touches like textured wallpaper, comfortable seating, and new carpeting in deep green and blue tones.
New entertainment and technology features were added to the auditorium, including a super-sized 90” TV, game tables, new computer stations, and a wall mounted TV for the solarium. Funds for the auditorium upgrade were made possible through a grant from the Rosenberg family, long time supporters of the Witherell.
Tower renovations are also underway and will include all four long-term resident care units. New ceilings will be added, along with new lighting, carpeting, decorative moldings, wallpaper, furniture, and other design elements. A feature of the new renovations will be the significant enhancement to our bathing/shower facilities. A new, beautifully tiled spa will be added to each floor featuring a spacious state of the art tub, shower area, and rest room. Work on the fourth floor is completed and the second floor renovation is nearing completion, while first floor renovations will begin the week of July 30th.
Pustola & Associates, an architectural firm in Naugatuck, CT, designed the Witherell’s renovations; Wernert Construction in Cos Cob, CT is managing the project.
“Construction can be challenging, but our residents are excited for the changes,” notes Brown. “These projects will create spaces that we can all enjoy for years to come.”
